Hip Holiday Happenings

Hip Holiday Happenings 2012

We’ve decorated the tree, hung up our tinsel and mistletoe, and perfected our Christmas recipes. Now, we’re ready to deck the halls and hit the town for some festive fun. While our major attractions offer largely publicized holiday events, live like a local on your next trip to San Diego and check out the festivities in the city’s coolest neighborhoods instead (especially since we’re located in one!). Here are our picks for one-of-a-kind San Diego holiday events where you’ll have a chance to mix, mingle and be merry with local San Diegans.

Hillcrest Taste and Tini’s (walking distance)
Thursday, December 13, from 5-9pm

Eat, drink and be merry…Hillcrest-style. Just steps outside our front door, shops will be opening their doors and fixing up holiday-inspired cocktails using Six One Nine Vodka during this signature holiday event in Hillcrest. Enjoy these classy martini sips while you shop for holiday gifts and indulge in festive fare provided by local signature chefs and Hillcrest restaurants, including appetizers, entrees and decadent sweet treats. Buy your tickets here.

Santa Con San Diego

SantaCon – North Park (5 mins by car)
Saturday, Dec 8 5-10pm

Pay homage to the big, red jolly guy by putting on your Santa suit and joining other holiday-crazed Santas for an ultra-fun downtown pubcrawl. A worldwide event that also takes in other major metropolitan cities, SantaCon brings holiday cheer to a whole new level, with hundreds of men and women dressed like Santa Clause, parading around, visiting different bars and embracing whatever merry chaos comes their way. No halfway efforts here – this event requires masquerading as Santa from head to toe. Come with your full beards, cherry red suits, and black boots. Have fun with with it – wear board shorts instead of pants, or comes as Mrs. Clause. Santa will be proud.

12 Plates, 12 Beers, 12 Pairings at Local Habit (Hillcrest, walking distance)
Wednesday, December 12, 2012

Talk about the “12 tastes” of Christmas. Holiday fare just got hip at Local Habit, a local favorite eatery serving up organic, locally sourced food and craft beer. Just a short jaunt on foot from our bed & breakfast, Local Habit is celebrating 12/12/12 (did you know there won’t be another 12/12/12 for another century!) with a mammoth 12-plate dinner saluting the artisan AleSmith Brewing (also from San Diego!). Starting promptly at 6:30 p.m., a fresh course and beer will be served every 15 minutes, including Barrel-aged Nautical Nut Brown Ale paired with Bourbon-braised Rabbit with Colemans Mustard, followed by Lil’ Devil paired with Beet Panna Cotta with Papalo. But your tickets here.

Toy for Tots Gourmet Food Truck Festival – Mira Mesa (15 mins by car)
Saturday, Dec 15 11:30am-5pm

Even Santa won’t be able to stay away from this one. If you want a chance to mingle with San Diego locals and fellow foodies while raising money for a local charity, then head up to Mira Mesa (a neighborhood about a 15-min drive north from our B&B) for the 1st Annual Toys for Tots Gourmet Food Truck Festival. The event will feature San Diego’s top 20 gourmet food trucks, live music, arts and crafts festival, a children’s zone, and eating contests. Admission is only $5, but free if you bring an unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots. Check out the full food truck line-up here.

Unsilent Night (Downtown San Diego – 5 minutes by car)
Friday, December 21, 2012

An unconventional, yet ultra-cool, Christmas caroling experience will hit the streets of downtown San Diego with the 11th Annual Unsilent Night. This strolling soundscape includes people of all ages and backgrounds for communal, electronic caroling. Participants are encouraged to bring Ipod speakers, a boom box, or any anything that amplifies music and will be given one of four tracks (all four tracks comprise Phil Kline’s ambient Unsilent Night). Then, you’ll walk throughout the streets of downtown San Diego and create a unique mobile sound sculpture which is different from every listeners perspective. Previous participants agree that this one-of-a-kind event (held in other cities throughout the world) will get your holidays off to a stunning start, albeit a little off-kilter.
